It is interesting that Menger wrote a letter to Walras on this very subject.(…) Menger said that mathematics was all very well for certain descriptive purposes, but it did not enable you to get the essence of the phenomenon. I wish I thought it were true that the language of mathematics had some special faculty drawing attention away from pseudo-problems of qualitative essence. For, unlike Menger, I would consider that a great advantage.
